Albany, NY (PRWEB) March 17, 2011

I LOVE NEW YORK (http://www.iloveny.com), New York State’s tourism promotion agency, and EscapeMaker.com are seeking to celebrate those individuals who are doing their part to keep the Empire State green with the second annual contest to find the “Greenest NYer” of 2011.

“New York is full of natural wonders and attractions, many of which have made changes to become more environmentally friendly. Examples of this can be seen with the Niagara Falls State Park, the Empire State Building and Fire Island National Seashore,” said Peter Davidson, Executive Director of Empire State Development, which administers the I LOVE NEW YORK campaign. “Our Greenest NYer is an example of what each of us can do, as residents or as visitors, to preserve and improve the incredible natural heritage and beauty of our State. We are seeking an Ambassador for the State who will not only spread the green travel word, but who will also inspire awareness and appreciation of the environment.”

Entries for the Greenest NYer contest must be received by midnight on April 5, 2011. Public voting will begin April 7 online and the top three candidates will be named finalists, to be judged by a panel of expert judges.

The panel will include:

Matt Weingarten, Executive Chef, Inside Park at St. Bart’s
Peter Lindabury, LEED AP Consultant for the Conference Center at Lake Placid
Kate Sinding, senior attorney and Deputy Director of the New York urban program at the National Resource Defense Council
Valarie D’Elia, travel correspondent for NY1 News
Kaity Tsui, Greenest NYer 2010

To apply, contestants can log onto http://www.escapemaker.com/ilovenygreen and in 250 words or less tell I LOVE NEW YORK and EscapeMaker.com why they deserve the title of “Greenest NYer.” To be considered, New York State residents will need to:

Be a striving ‘eco-extraordinaire’ and demonstrate a clear passion for spreading the “green word.”
Illustrate a commitment to and leadership in protecting the environment.
Describe how they’ve contributed to sustainable eco-practices and what they do regularly to maintain a “green spirit.”

Contestants are highly encouraged to include videos and photographs in their submissions.

The Grand Prize winner will be announced just after Earth Day, Saturday, April 30, at Escapemaker.com’s Green Getaways, Local Food & Travel Expo with a special press conference held by I LOVE NEW YORK. As the official I LOVE NEW YORK Greenest NYer, the winner will get to spend one year traveling New York State (in their free time) and experience some of its finest green/eco-tourism offerings, while using the title in his or her networking and work in the promotion of sustainability. In addition, EscapeMaker.com will donate $ 500 to the green organization of the winner’s choice. (Organization must be a 501(c)3 and is subject to approval).

As Greenest NYer, the winner will attend the award ceremony on April 30th, travel the state over their year-long tenure visiting New York’s incredible green and natural assets, blog about their adventures as the Greenest NYer, and make occasional public appearances as their schedule allows.

Last April, in recognition of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, I LOVE NEW YORK, along with EscapeMaker.com, introduced the “Greenest NYer” contest to honor individuals who are making earnest efforts to preserve the environment in their everyday lives and the lives of others.

Over the past year, 2010 Greenest NYer Kaity Tsui of New York City has served as an ambassador of green travel in New York State, visiting several of the state’s iconic green destinations and spreading the word on sustainable living in travel and everyday life. She recently returned from a visit to the Adirondack Park and Lake Placid area, where her stops included Lake Placid’s new environmentally-designed conference center as well as the Wild Center in Tupper Lake. The Greenest NYer’s experiences are documented on the “Diaries of the Greenest NYer” blog (http://www.greenheartny.wordpress.com).

Denver, CO (PRWEB) April 5, 2011

History Colorado has selected Denver-based K-M Concessions, Inc. to manage the culinary and retail programs of the new History Colorado Center in Denver, as well as support its guest services and facility operations programs such as admissions, janitorial and grounds maintenance.

The History Colorado Center, a major museum and tourist destination, is now under construction at 12th Avenue and Broadway in Denver. It is scheduled to open to the public in Spring 2012.

K-M Concessions responded to a competitive Request for Proposals (RFP) in October 2010, which was vetted through the Colorado State procurement process.

K-M Concessions manages retail, culinary and other service departments for a variety of cultural destinations across the United States, including such zoos like the Denver Zoo, botanical gardens, museums, aquariums and more. It has a strong reputation in the industry for its culinary and retail expertise and delivering outstanding customer service.

“History Colorado is undergoing a major transformation to meet the needs and expectations of a savvy, 21st century museum-going audience. We were looking for a partner that reflected this transformation with innovative ideas and a true understanding of how to best serve a diverse set of audiences,” said Ed Nichols, President and CEO of History Colorado. “After going through a rigorous RFP process, K-M Concessions rose to the top. We are so pleased to have them join us as partners in what is truly an exciting new era for our 130-year-old institution.”

“We are extremely pleased with how well our values align with the vision and values of History Colorado,” said Kevin McNicholas, President and CEO of K-M Concessions, Inc. “This partnership is built on the understanding that a guest’s experience plays a major role in determining the overall perception of the attraction. Our focus will be offering an extremely positive guest experience that complements History Colorado’s incredible new exhibitions and educational programs that are planned for the History Colorado Center.”

McNicholas noted that a key operating strategy is to showcase the company’s commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly solutions in every aspect of its operations, as well as the implementation of a fully integrated point-of-sale solution that shares data among foodservice, retail, admissions, membership and more. “Sharing this data across departments will enable both partners to make more intelligent decisions on guest promotions, menus and educational merchandise while enhancing overall communication,” said McNicholas.

“K-M Concessions brought original ideas to the table, the team has a passion for Colorado and a commitment to promoting and selling Colorado made and sustainable products, along with a proven track record that we expect will elevate our visitor’s overall experience to the History Colorado Center,” said W. Bart Berger, Board Chairman of History Colorado.

The History Colorado Center will be a dynamic new tourist destination for Colorado and an economic catalyst that supports statewide heritage tourism, archaeology and historic preservation, as well as a thought-provoking center for civic dialogue in an environment that encourages an inspirational journey into the future through experiencing the past. It will house collections, new exhibitions, education/public programs, the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, the State Historical Fund, the Stephen H. Hart Research Library, and support History Colorado’s network of statewide museums, as well as other functions. Scheduled to open in 2012, visitors of all ages to the History Colorado Center will experience new exhibitions that blend technology, artifacts and immersive environments that shape compelling stories about our state.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) April 29, 2011

A device that will revolutionize spinal fusion operations, an online Web site for selling products to babies in Brazil, and new software that turns a mobile phone into an accurate but inexpensive tool for diagnosing heart and lung disease were the big winners in the final round of the Harvard Business School Business Plan Contest. The event, held before a large and appreciative audience in Burden Auditorium on Tuesday afternoon (April 26), marked the 15th anniversary of the for-profit business venture track and the 11th year of the social venture track, which focuses on creating social value via nonprofit, for-profit, or hybrid-model plans. The capstone of the School’s extensive Entrepreneurial Studies curriculum, the contest awards prizes totaling more than $ 150,000 in cash and in-kind services to the winners and runners-up in both tracks.

The contest is open to all Harvard MBA candidates; at least one member of each team must be an HBS student. Sixty-three teams in the business venture track and twenty-five in the social venture track submitted plans to the 2011 contest. Over time, more than 100 judges from fields such as venture capital, angel investing, consulting, law, accounting, life sciences, high technology, philanthropy, social entrepreneurship, and academia reduced the field to the total of nine finalists.

“The HBS Business Plan Contest reflects the amazing talent at this school,” said Dean Nitin Nohria. “The ideas presented here aim to transform the lives of others, and that is what Harvard Business School is all about. HBS created the first real department of entrepreneurship decades ago under the leadership of Professor Howard Stevenson, and only eighteen years after its creation, our Social Enterprise Initiative has become one of the greatest groups of its kind in the country.”

This year there were co-winners in the business venture track. HBS second-year student Kimball Thomas and Davis Smith won for Baby.com.br, an online one-stop-shop for baby products in Brazil. Professor Jan Rivkin served as their faculty advisor. Romish Badani and Derek Poppinga (both HBS 2012) were members of the BOSS Medical team, which also included Haim Gottfried, Maxim Budyansky, Neil Shah, Peter Truskey, and Shoval Dekel. Using technology developed at The Johns Hopkins University, the new venture is developing a minimally invasive device to significantly improve the effectiveness of spinal fusion procedures. Following further testing and approval by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), the company expects to be open for business in early 2013. Senior Lecturer Robert Higgins served as their faculty advisor.

In the social venture track, the winning team was Sana Care, comprising second-year student Sidhant Jena, along with Anshuman Sharma and Ikaro Silva. The new venture, which will undergo clinical trials in India, aims to provide remote cardiac and pulmonary diagnostic services over any mobile phone, with a goal of reaching ten million patients in five years. Their faculty advisor was Professor Tarun Khanna. Senior Lecture Michael Roberts, executive director of the School’s Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship, announced three runners-up in the business venture track. They were (in alphabetical order):

MyTeksi, founded by second-year students Anthony Tan, Hooi Ling Tan, and Adeline Chan, plans to revamp the Malaysian taxi system by introducing low-cost, mobile-based technology to both the supply (dispatch companies) and demand (passenger) sides of the distribution chain to improve efficiency, safety, and quality of service. Senior Lecturer Frank Cespedes was the faculty advisor.

Qweek provides a fully automatic cloud-based solution to workforce optimization and management, helping businesses achieve significant savings by replacing traditional rigid shift scheduling with dynamic shifts that adjust to align numbers of workers available with the demand for their services. Advised by Senior Lecturer Robert Higgins, the team was composed of Roman Itskovich, Anita Venkiteswaran (both HBS 2012), Alexander Ginzburg, and Daniel Rubinstein.

Ubiquitious Energy distributes electricity to “off-grid” communities around the world by means of low-cost solar panels (a new product called “sol sheets”) that are easy to use and that can be interconnected over time. The team members are second-year student Bart Howe, along with Miles Barr, Erdin Beshimov, Jutta Friedrichs, and Nathan Trujillo. Assistant Professor Ramana Nanda served as their faculty advisor.

Senior Lecturer Michael Chu announced the runner-up in the social enterprise track:

The Watt Campaign is a for-profit social enterprise that mobilizes high school students to launch effective energy efficiency initiatives in their schools and communities. Advised by Senior Lecturer John Macomber, the team is composed of Luke Winston (HBS 2011), Rony Kubat, and Stephen Elliott.

Each winning team in the Business Venture track was awarded $ 25,000 in cash as well as an equal amount of in-kind services. They also received the Dubilier Prize, honoring the late Martin Dubilier (MBA 1952), cofounder of the prominent leveraged buyout firm of Clayton, Dubilier & Rice.

The runner-up teams in the business venture track received $ 10,000 in cash and an equal amount of in-kind services, as well as the Satchu-Burgstone Entrepreneurship Award, endowed by Jon Burgstone (MBA 1999), Asif Satchu (MBA 1999), and Reza Satchu (MBA 1996) in 2001. After being named runners-up in the 1999 contest, these alumni went on to achieve considerable commercial success with their plan for SupplierMarket.com, an online marketplace for buying and selling manufactured materials.

The winning team in the social venture track won $ 25,000 in cash and $ 25,000 in in-kind services provided by The Bridgespan Group, a social enterprise consultancy, and the law firm of Foley Hoag. The runner-up team was awarded $ 10,000 in cash and services. Both winners and runners up in this track also received the Peter M. Sacerdote Prize, established by Mr. Sacerdote (MBA 1964) in honor of his 40th reunion and the Campaign for the Harvard Business School to enable more HBS graduates to apply their skills to develop and launch social-purpose ventures.

Also recognized during the event was Privahini Bradoo (MBA 2008), winner of the second annual Alumni New Venture Contest. Representing the HBS Association of Northern California and the HBS Tech Alumni Club, Bradoo is the founder of BioMine, which aims to apply existing technologies in a novel way to “mine” the e-wastes generated by the huge amount of electronics equipment discarded each year. Hosted by the Rock Center, the Alumni New Venture Contest shines a spotlight on graduates’ enterprises, bringing to campus teams representing Harvard Business School Clubs from around the world. Bradoo received a cash prize of $ 25,000.

In addition, Rakhi Mehra (MBA 2009), founder of Micro Home Solutions, a New Delhi-based venture for creating a portfolio of housing solutions for the poor, was named the recipient of the 2011 Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship, designed to support recent HBS graduates who are creating ventures that focus on creating social value. Through a competitive selection process, the Fellowship supports recent graduates with a $ 25,000 award.

Past participants in the HBS Business Plan Contest have gone on to create many successful companies such as Cloudfare, which enables Web sites to intelligently protect themselves from online attacks; Finale, a Boston-area restaurant chain serving desserts and beverages; RelayRides, the world’s first person-to-person car sharing service; Rent the Runway, which provides access to designer clothing at a fraction of the retail price; Diagnostic-For-All, a nonprofit enterprise that has developed a low-cost, paper-based “lab-on-a-chip” for diagnosing diseases in poor regions around the world; Global Citizen Year, which encourages students between high school and college to address the global challenges of the 21st century; Good Start Genetics, which is developing a low-cost, pre-pregnancy test for multiple genetic disorders; and New Leaders for New Schools, a national nonprofit organization devoted to improving education for all children by attracting and preparing the next generation of outstanding leaders for urban public schools.

Run under the auspices of the Harvard Business School’s Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship and the Social Enterprise Initiative, the HBS Business Plan Contest provides an integrative learning experience for all participants. The prime objectives of the contest are to educate students in the process of creating and evaluating new business ventures, prepare them for opportunities in traditional and social entrepreneurship during their careers, and harness the unique resources that HBS offers.

The contest is one of several special programs funded by the Rock Center, which was created through the generosity of prominent venture capitalist Arthur Rock (MBA 1951). In 2003, he donated $ 25 million to HBS to support the entrepreneurship faculty and their research, fellowships for MBA and doctoral students, symposia and conferences, and new outreach efforts to extend the impact of the School’s extensive work in this field. To further contribute to its research and course development efforts, Harvard Business School also established the California Research Center in the heart of Silicon Valley in 1997.

Harvard Business School offered the country’s first business school course in entrepreneurship in 1947. Today, members of the HBS Entrepreneurial Management Unit, which numbers more than 30 faculty, teach a required course to some 900 students in the first year of the MBA program along with a broad selection of popular elective courses to second-year students.

The United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship has recognized the Harvard Business School entrepreneurship program as the best in the country.

About the HBS Social Enterprise Initiative

Since 1993, the HBS Social Enterprise Initiative (SEI) has applied innovative business practices and managerial disciplines to drive sustained, high-impact social change. The Social Enterprise Initiative acts as a catalyst for creating social value by serving as a focal point for the creativity and energy of its worldwide community. These efforts have manifested themselves in a number of areas, ranging from the participation of approximately 90 faculty members in social enterprise research and teaching to the creation of over 500 social enterprise cases and teaching notes. Courses that focus on social enterprise are embedded into the MBA curriculum and HBS Executive Education program offerings, reflecting a real-world blending of business and social issues. Beyond the classroom, the Initiative offers career development and community engagement programs designed to support students and alumni engaged in the social sector.

Richmond, CA (PRWEB) June 28, 2011

Anticipation is growing in the City of Richmond as the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) continues to move forward with the site selection process for its second campus. The University of California, Berkeley-owned Richmond Field Station, one of LBNL?s remaining candidate sites, is being recognized as a shoreline campus location that would inspire researchers to continue to develop innovative energy solutions for the 21st century and beyond. The University of California, Berkeley has developed a Campus Concept Plan for this facility situated along San Francisco Bay that ?presents a vision for a new research campus that embraces the existing unique and successful partnership between the University of California, Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). An initial campus would combine an LBNL Energy and Life Sciences research cluster, and the existing UC Berkeley Engineering research cluster, on University-owned properties in the Richmond, California southern waterfront area.?

Meanwhile, Richmond city officials are enthusiastically sporting buttons that announce: I Heart LBNL. “We?re looking forward to making Richmond the ideal home for LBNL?s second campus and understand the positive economic impact that it would have on the Richmond community,” says City Manager, Bill Lindsay, a Haas Business School alum. “The natural beauty of the Richmond Field Station speaks for itself, and the city will do everything in its power to streamline the process for the developer and welcome the campus into the community.?

The facility will eventually accommodate up to two million gross square feet. These combined research and development clusters are expected to accelerate innovation, technology transfer, and commercialization, while creating jobs. Final selection for the Richmond Field Station developer is expected by early July and final selection of the site from among five other site locations being considered by LBNL is expected in early winter.

From its 32 miles of walkable shoreline trails to its revitalized downtown center, Richmond is a city on the rise, thanks to its competitive leasing rates, enterprise tax incentives and appealing amenities. Richmond already hosts a number of green and applied science businesses including LBNL spinoff Alion, Heliodyne, PAX Water, MBA Polymer and recently acquired Sunpower. And it?s attracting more.

?Moving to Richmond from San Francisco is the perfect fit for our company and our workforce,? says William ‘Billy’ Morrison site director of Hoefer, a division of Harvard Bioscience. The company, which manufactures gel electrophoresis equipment for testing DNA, scoured the Bay Area before settling on a location in Richmond and will relocate in early fall. ?Cash is king and Richmond?s real estate prices were the most competitive. But even more important, the majority of our employees live in the East Bay and will now have a much easier and less expensive commute with nearby access to BART and I-580.?

Richmond?s village-like communities are also in motion, re-tooling neighborhoods street-by-street. Downtown revitalization efforts have spawned growing merchant associations and green-tech industry clusters. With a top Richmond site in contention for LBNL?s new second campus, the view is looking very good from Richmond.

New York, NY (PRWEB) August 24, 2011

Suing the Devil makes the list of WIRED Magazine?s ?Top Summer Movies That Will Rock Your World?.

The film opens in select theaters nationwide on August 26, 2011. Resonating strongly with audiences of all ages across the country, potent word of mouth is already branding Suing the Devil as the ?summer film to watch?.

Critics and people alike are saying this is Malcolm McDowell?s finest performance. ?He plays the best devil in Hollywood history,? says one critic. ?Every inch, every fiber, every line is made with the cunning edge of a very sharp blade.?

WIRED Magazine says, ?Sorry, yes. We are totally obsessed with this movie.? The film has already attracted over 10,500 fans on Facebook and was recently shown at this year?s Berlin Film Festival/Market.

Suing the Devil, shot in Sydney, Australia, stars Malcolm McDowell, Corbin Bernsen, Shannen Fields, Tom Sizemore, Ros Gentle, Bart Bronson, and Rebecca St. James.

Written and directed by Tim Chey (?The Genius Club? ?Gone?), the film is turning the heads of everyone from atheists to pastors. The film turned away 1,000 people at one screening and continues to draw standing-room only crowds at publicity screenings. ?One of the highest-rated Nightline episodes was whether Satan exists,? says Chey, a former atheist and Harvard alumnus.

In the film, Luke O?Brien (Bart Bronsen), a washed-up janitor turned night law student, decides to sue Satan (Malcolm McDowell) for $ 8 trillion dollars. On the last day before Luke ?les a default judgment, Satan appears to defend himself. On Satan?s legal team are 10 of the country?s best trial lawyers (Dennis Cole, Jeff Gannon, Annie Lee). The entire world watches Legal TV (Corbin Bernsen, Tom Sizemore, Rebecca St. James) to see who will win the Trial of the Century.
